We’ve all heard the phrase, “we’ve only got one planet.” It’s supposed to remind us to take care of it since we do not have a lot of viable options if we screw it up. However, Earth Day only comes once a year and these photos show that it is obviously too much trouble to care about our planet the other 364 days a year. Take a look at these haunting photos of environmental pollution and it might just make you consider doing just a little more to keep our planet clean.
1. Great Pacific Garbage Patch
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is aptly named because it is a giant floating patch of garbage in the Pacific Ocean. Its massive size is hard to detect because large portions of the garbage in the garbage patch is actually tiny microscopic pieces of plastic. Plastic takes centuries to biodegrade, in the meantime it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. The patch is a combination of garbage, plastic and sludge.
2. Trash a Wave
Surfing has never quite looked like this before. This wave is off the coast of Java, an Indonesian island that is the most populated in the world. That many people in such a small space leads to plenty of trash that is discarded in inappropriate places. So all the garbage that gets thrown in the sea or washes away into the ocean, comes crash back on the surfers and the beach.
